ah-ha! Suck it – I finished the mittens
& celabrating a year in good company

Raven Mitten - doneRemember my goal to finish those Raven mittens? Well I did it! Late Saturday evening, sitting next to a fire, tucked away safely in a cabin next to a stormy Lake Superior. Which was throwing 5ft (and much larger down the coast) waves against the rocks for three days straight. This lake never fails to amaze me with it’s power and beauty. Me and my partner (the new owner of the mittens) were there for the weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We spent an exciting Saturday up in Grand Marais, MN watching huge waves crash against  the shore, climbing over rocks and taking in the late fall colors. We where also rained on a little. And our nights where spent lounging next to a fire with cheap wine, wondering if a cereal killer was watching us from the dark woods and watching bad cable TV.

I Love taking my knitting in the car, it always keeps me happily busy, but I can stop and enjoy the scenery at anytime. Listen to the radio or talk with someone in the car. I tried to read, but when a grown man is singing pop music next to me I find it hard to really concentrate. I also like to find new yarn stores in places I’ve never been and buy something I might not find near home. This time I feel like I got really lucky. I found someone who had a discontinued line from White Buffalo, it’s called Unspun.  In both 6ply and 3ply. And it’s discontinued and vintage (or so she said). Not sure what I’ll do with it yet, but it’s my souvenir yarn. I can just leave it on my shelf and admire it if I want, like other people do with shot glasses or those little spoons. I also got a hank of Mountain Colors-Monarch in the Northern Lights color-way. 100% merino so of course it soft and squishy. I might actually make something from this, small cowl maybe? Any-who the Raven’s Beak Design store was small and so much fun to visit. We almost missed it too, we had just gotten into the car when I saw the sign a block away, I think I may have screamed a little bit.
We also found a really lovely mug by a local artist. We are mug people, though I am more yarn person – than mug person. There is I guess quite an artist community in the area. We talked all the way back to the cabin about how much we’d liked to live there. Even with the cold.

I also met a women from Turkey in a tiny coffee, bakery and pizza shop that knits too. I learned they usually use double pointed needles, she didn’t know what a circular needle was and she wasn’t one for patterns. She had asked to look at my hat after picking on us for wearing “winter” clothes. I should have been offended, we live in MN. A light weight lacy cowl, also light stocking cap (made from acrylic), even lighter cardigan and fingerless gloves does not equal winter clothes. It’s “hey, it’s 50 degrees and raining” outside gear.

I was going to start my Wanderlust gloves, but after winding up my chosen yarn decided there wasn’t likely enough. So I’m feeling a little empty, I guess I could finish weaving ends in on my mothers blanket and my boom town scarf.
Maybe.
